The History of Tenuta Monte Ulivi
Surrounded by the gentle hills of Lombardy and embraced by peaceful tranquility, Tenuta Monte Ulivi in Cavriana is a place deeply rooted in history and passion.
Cavriana, picturesquely situated among the rolling hills of Lombardy, looks back on a long history dating all the way to Roman times. During the Middle Ages, the village evolved into a strategically important settlement, favored by its elevated position with sweeping views across the surrounding landscape.
Cavriana gained particular historical significance during the Battle of Solferino in 1859 — the event that ultimately led to the founding of the International Red Cross.
Due to its strategic location, the village formed part of the Austrian defensive line and temporarily served as an important military outpost. Even Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria stayed in the region to coordinate troop movements.
The highest hill in the area — today home to Tenuta Monte Ulivi — played a particularly important role during this time. It served Austrian troops as an observation and retreat point, allowing them to oversee the battlefield and strategically adjust their movements.
Our hill was once divided into many small individual plots. In the 1970s, the visionary previous owner questioned this fragmentation and reunited the parcels, laying the foundation for something truly special. Traditional viticulture continued here, with a particular focus on red wines.
A passion for exceptional wine could already be felt throughout the estate.
In 1984, the parents of the current owners took over the Tenuta. With renewed energy, they expanded the cultivation of renowned grape varieties such as Merlot, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon.
Tenuta Monte Ulivi quickly established itself as a synonym for exquisite wines, winning the hearts of wine lovers far beyond the region and earning numerous awards and distinctions.
After three decades, although the vines continued to flourish, the estate was not immune to the effects of globalization and the growing shortage of skilled labor.
The challenges of wine production became increasingly noticeable, and the number of bottles that could still be entirely produced and marketed independently became more limited.
Nevertheless, the family remained devoted to their passion and has since continued selling their grapes to neighboring wineries in order to preserve the tradition.
After careful consideration, a significant decision was made in 2025 to reduce the production of red wine and focus on other agricultural products.
Yet every challenge also brings new opportunities. Looking ahead, the owners recognized the enormous potential of the estate and decided to place the preservation and care of the entire property at the center of their vision.
With great dedication and a deep connection to Italian culture, they are now focusing on the cultivation of white wine grapes, olives, fruits, and vegetables.
At the same time, a new vision was born: to create a unique accommodation experience that embodies authentic Italian flair and brings visitors closer to the beauty of Italian culture and lifestyle.
And so, the story of Tenuta Monte Ulivi in Cavriana continues.
It remains a living testament to tradition, resilience, and a deep passion for viticulture and rural heritage.
Tenuta Monte Ulivi is a place where the past is honored while the future is shaped with hope, creativity, and dedication.
Amid the gentle hills, surrounded by fragrant olive groves and flourishing vineyards, the spirit of the Tenuta lives on — a story that continues to be written.
